Stress

Today we realise that there is no point in having material things if we do not have our health and our lives and that our recovery must come first and stay first if we are to get well and stay well.

Most people are aware that stress and anger are leading contributors to all kinds of diseases and just like other people we have suffered the destructive effects of stress, anger and fear in our lives. Before we got sick and came to Cancer Anonymous™ our priorities were very different. Our instincts for money, attention and relationships were driving our lives. Often without realising it, many of us got caught up in a race with other people and were constantly competing for our instinctual desires to be met. Today we realise that there is no point in having material things if we do not have our health and our lives and that our recovery must come first and stay first if we are to get well and stay well. We had to let go of our all or nothing stressful approach to life!

Our self destructive attitude to life was to either ‘take over’ or ‘take off’. However our sickness gave us a wake up call to the reality that we needed to learn how to ‘take part’ and to be one among many. When we came to believe in a Power greater than ourselves, our self-esteem was fulfilled from the inside by the knowledge that we are important because God loves us and will care for us if we ask Him. When we look back, we realize that the things which came to us when we put ourselves in God’s hands were better than anything we could have planned. The impossible demands that we used to place on ourselves in the worldly struggle for money, attention and romance has been replaced by an anonymous gratitude that we are alive and well and that we have been given the privilege of helping other people to get well.
